Tesserae are tiles used in creating a mosaic. They are usually in the shape of a cube. We study tesserae mosaic in Ancient History studies; Ancient Rome and the Byzantine Empire. We explore lots of images of ancient tesserae mosaics and the architectural applications. I airplay the images on the Apple TV for the kids.
Tesserae mosaics can be created with different colored dry beans or small pebbles. Browse my pinterest board for ideas. Younger children will enjoy magnetic mosaics. I like both of the sets below.

Explore the infinite designs and expand on the art and history of tesserea mosaic with the Classic Mosaics Coloring Book and the Celtic Mosaics Coloring Book. This is fun while listening to audiobooks or for free play.
Older children will enjoy a tesserae mosaic kit and mosaic tools. There are several choices from ALEA Mosaics. I personally love this dolphin mosaic kit.
