Second Grade Curriculum
Bible
This year we will use Tapestry of Grace Year 2 to survey and contextualize Bible history. We will begin studying scripture, along with the bible stories that we have been reading. We will be using What the Bible is All About: Reproducible Maps, Charts, Timelines, and Illustrations.
We will study scripture based upon the following:
SOAP Method: Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer AND Studying People (direct statement, character of the people), Purpose (direct statement, key words and repeated phrases, count the number of times a word or phrase is repeated), Problems (direct statement, telephone effect-one-sided conversation), Principles, and Promises AND We will be asking the questions: Who, Where, When, What, Why?
We will learn the testaments and books of the Bible. We will utilize digital methods of biblical research using Logos and BibleGateway.com.

History and Historical Geography
We will be studying The Life of Christ and Early Christians, The Middle Ages – The Dark Ages – Medieval, The Reformation and The Renaissance.
Geography Skills
We will be studying World Geography this year. And to sharpen our geography skills we will be using Evan-Moor Daily Geography Practice: Grade 2.
Language Arts
We will continue using All About Learning Press curriculum for spelling and reading. This is my favorite curriculum for reading and spelling. We have had much success with this program! Yay!

We use Handwriting Without Tears Wet-Dry-Try app for letter formation instruction and we practice actual grip and handling with a slate and chalk. We practice application of these skills in our spelling and writing lessons.

We will begin using Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock as a supplement. We will begin using Considering God’s Creation, as a supplement.
I need to find a good Christian-based biography series. Something like this: http://www.ywampublishing.com, but more extensive, including science. We will study this information again in 6th grade.
We will continue Lego Mindstorms.

We will be using the online language program, Mango Languages, to learn Spanish: Latin American dialect and Chinese: Mandarin dialect. This program is available for free online through our local library.

Visual Art Skills
We will discuss God as the ultimate creator. We will be implementing visual art skills as it pertains to our history studies. We will be using Artistic Pursuits Book 1 and Book 2 for our hands on art lessons. Basic drawing skills will be covered in the Draw-Write-Now: A Drawing and Handwriting Course for Kids program that we are using in handwriting.

Visual Art History and Appreciation – ITEMS TO PURCHASE
We will be studying visual art as it pertains to our history studies in Tapestry of Grace Year 2 and Story of the World Volume 2. We will be reading the Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists by Mike Venezia series (43 in series). I am interested in Anholt’s Artists as an introduction to the famous masters and using the corresponding activity book (8 in series), but undecided as the series is small.

We will be using free lessons online for the following: Beginning Harmonica, Beginning Recorder, Beginning Piano, and Beginning Guitar.

We will be studying music as it pertains to our history studies.
We will be reading the Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Composers by Mike Venezia series (14 in series). I need to purchase the books throughout the year, as needed. We will be listening to musical compositions from the composers using iTunes.

We will continue learning simple yoga poses in The ABCs of Yoga for Kids by Teresa Anne Power. We will continue hunting and fishing with Daddy; possibly taking a hunter education class and a short introduction to archery class. We will watch videos of fencing to measure interest level.

Art: We will continue using the fun and creative Usborne activity books. I need to purchase The Usborne Complete Book of Drawing. We will be using the following iPad art apps for digital media: Art Set, Wasabi Paint, and Paper
Music: We will continue to explore and ‘play’ with our musical instrument collection.
